Create VLANs with BT Business Smart Hub 6

Hi all, I currently use a 3rd party Draytek router instead of our BT business hub 5 so that I can create VLANs to isolate the internet-enabled credit card teminals at our business location. I'm being offered a BT Business Smart Hub 6 as part of a new broadband package and I wondered does anyone know if you can use this to create VLANs? If not, does anyone have experience of using this in front of a smart switch with VLAN cabability to achieve what I'm after (or have a better solution)?

I would just carry on using the Draytek as it works really well, but the new 4G Assure service looks like a good idea and requires the new Smart Hub 6 to work.

Thanks in advance.

Netgear GS724T v3 Switch and Bt Business Smart Hub

I have a a BT Internet connection on my local community centre, supplied via a BT Business Smart Hub. This is connected to a Netgear GS724T v3 Smart Switch.

On this switch 6 ports are for the office computers and the CCTV feed.

The remaining ports feed various switches on the site for the other users.

I need to setup this up so the others users can't see or access information from the office computers.

I've looked online into VLAN's and Subnetting, and can set up a separate Vlan for the 6 office ports, but when i do this they cant seem to access the Internet.

I've setup a separate Vlan called 'Office' on Vlan 4

I then used the PVid to allocate the ports 1-6 to Vlan 4 and remove them from Vlan 1

My Feed from the Bt Hub comes into Port 24 of the Switch -

Do i change this to T on Vlan 4 and Vlan 1?

Do I need to alter any setting in the Bt Hub ?

Any help would be appreciated

Setting up VPN

I have recently changed to using BT, from EE, and am trying to set up the 'BT Business Smart Hub' for use with VPN.

My setup (which previously worked fine with the EE router), was to set up port forwarding rules for UDP 1701, 500 and 4500 to forward to the same ports on my Synology NAS, for use with it's L2TP/IPSec VPN server, and use DDNS to allow the router's IP to be found from anywhere.

I have tested the DDNS, and it works, I can ping the router (when ping is enabled), however the VPN connection doesn't get through. I've set up the same port forwarding rules, as far as I can tell, everything should be working, but it doesn't look like any connections make it through to the NAS.

Without having SSH access to the router, I have no idea how to work out what's going on inside. I've tried with and without 'VPN port forwarding', with UPNP disabled/enabled, with the firewall set to default, and with it set to allow all traffic, nothing seems to work.

Is there any way to see the connections, or a firewall log, or anything at all?!

A good quality router to recommend?

I have a modem + router combo given by the provider, but it's not functioning properly (IP address problem and unstable connection) and I was thinking of buying a router and hope it would solve the problem. The thing is the modem + router is connected to a splitter inside the wall via coaxial cable and I also have the phone connected to the modem + router itself. I hope I explained well. So instead of buying a whole new combo, I was thinking of purchasing a 2.4/5 GHz good quality router in hopes of resolving the issue What manufacturer or model can you recommend that costs under 80 USD?

Crappy upload speeds

I have reported a fault to BT as I am getting very poor video call quality. My D\L speed on Speedtest.net is 20mb. My U/L is 0.7-0.9mb.

BT asked me to use their own tool at speedtest.btwholesale.com and it comes up with 3.5mb, but when you run the further diagnostics link it shows only 2.2mb.

None of the independent speedtest pages show anything closew to that.

If I get an engineer out and he just does this test, then from BT side there is no fault found and I get a £245 charge and still have the same crap upload speeds. This is a common issue, what have others done?

I have an issue with the speed of my Infinity Fibre connection.

Since March of this year the connection speed has been 52mbps and very stable.

Last week whilst watching some streaming TV via the broadband connection the program suddenly started buffering. This is something that hasn't happened for quite a while so I decided to check the connection speed of the broadband.

It was then that I noticed the IP profile had been dropped from 52mbps to 35mbps. I reported this to BT via their online chat/fault reporting. The chat person was very helpful and agreed with me that the speed was quite slow. He arranged for an engineer to visit my premise to try and figure out what was wrong.

The agreed time for the visit was between 1pm and 6pm. 5.00pm came and went and there was no sign of anyone. The phone rings and I hear a voice saying she is calling on behalf of the company working for BT - she didn't tell me the name of the company - she said the engineer couldn't find my premise and could I direct him to my property. I agreed to do this and looked out of the window to see a white van parked almost outside my house. To cut it short I got this guy to my house. He came through the door and announced he was from 'CUBE' ? That was fine but what then occured was a complete eye opener. He was very scuffy but he did put some plastic overshows on. He entered my office and looked at my Draytek router and announced that he couldn't test my line without a BT router. At that he dashed out to his van and came back with a BT Home Hub 6. I said to him 'that router will not work on my static IP business line'. At that he said 'it will work' and proceeded to plug it in. We sat there for a little while waiting for the hub to connect, which it did not do. I said ' I've got a business hub I can get out' at which point he yanked out the home hub and dashed back out to his van to get a Business hub. He came back and plugged that in. He then got out a beat up iPad and was about to use that to connect wirelessly to his hub and check the line speeds etc.... I said ' shouldn't you use an Ethernet connection to get a true indication of the speed' - at this point he said I'm not listening to this crap from you, unplugged the hub and walked out !

I asked for his name to which he said 'you know my name cos I been calling you', I said how am I supposed to know your name from a phone call which I hadn't received. He gave me his name and was gone.

I immediately called BT who then explained to me that all work is now out sourced to the 'CUBE' but the actual company who had provided my engineer was a company called 'Bright Sparks'. The BT guy apologised for the engineer who had visited and insulted me.

I've now got another visit booked for BT to try and sort out my line speed.

I just thought I would relay this experience.

BT Business Hub 6 - PPTP passthrough

Does anyone know how to set up the BT Business Hub 6 for PPTP passthrough? The earlier BTB Hub 5 had a built-in list of apps, one of them being PPTP Server, which once loaded and pointed at your server, allowed Remote users access via Windows built-in PPTP vpn. This later hub has no built-in apps and I can't get the vpn to work.

BTBhub6 and Nest Thermostat

I have a BT Business Hub 6 and my Yealink T46S desk phones briefly drop their connections every 30-120 Seconds. I discovered that the drop out is caused by the Google Nest thermostat when it is connected to the WiFi. When I disconnect the Nest the dropouts cease. Has anyone experienced the same thing and if so have they found a viable solution?

VDSL speed issues - conflicting feedback

Hi all!

We have a Superfast Fibre Enhanced & Value Line package.

Advertised as up to 76Mbps download speed, up to 19Mbps upload speed.

Because this is what we were getting I called BT (note how stable it is, constantly around 50, no more, no less)

Over the phone BT said that as they can't see a fault with the line they will send an engineer.

The engineer was here for 3 hours today.

He connected a line tester(?) and was getting stable 55 down, 20 up.

He phoned in, they have tested the line etc. but there was no fault, he said the line is great, cabling is great.

So he requested for a boost on the line, after which he had these readings:

Before the Capacity with 55 was at 97%. He said it's very strange and looks like the line or the package is capped.

Speed via the hub didn't change, still at 55.

He left without being able to fix (changed the socket for good measure) and advised to call BT.

The BT guy after checking with the tech team said that the line is indeed capped, as I should get a minimum of 71 down, but usually, it would be more like 80 on this package.

So he was off to remove the cap. Then he said, no the line is not capped, 55 is the max down I can get and I can leave the contract free of charge if I don't like it.

This is the latest test result:

This is the test result from https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

This is the http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ test result

I really don't want to leave the contract, but my business is relying on good internet speeds and really want to know if this is the max I can get as I am quite confused because of the conflicting info I got so far.

Thanks for any help/comments

Infinity Speed drop?

EDIT: Anyone know why the images will not display?

Hi all, I got Infinity installed some time ago - the 40Mb package which was upgraded to 80Mb a while ago. While on the 40Mb we got download speeds of about 5MB and when it was upgraded it went close to 10MB. In the last couple of days trhis has dropped to about 2MB Download. I ran the standard speed check which tells me my connection is about 15Mbps, which should be closer to 80Mbps.

When I run the BT checker I get this:

BT Speed.png

maxing at 18.63Mbps instead of 80Mbps. Am I reading this right?

If so, why would it drop to a max of 18? I've check all the problem trackers and they all say there is no issue in my area.

I've also run this test...

And this is the Helpdesk page from my BT HH3

Any help appreciated (as I have 2 teenagers at home not happy).

Email servers unreachable from within BT

Hello,

I have an email address that uses these two email servers

pop.securemail.pro

authsmpt.securemail.pro

Since last Friday I'm unable to reach them when I'm hooked to the BT hub. But if I use my phone to tether to EE, everything works.

I have run a TRACERT on both and seen that, after a few hops, the trace stops and says the network is unreachable.

I have contated BT webchat support, but they don't understand what I'm talking about and they suggested me to call BT Tech Experts on the phone. Unfortunately, I'm a lodger and the account is not on my name, so, even though this has absolutely nothing to do with the home Hub, they simply can't help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot,

Pierfranco

SubnetMask: 225.225.225.248

Default Gateway: 86.175.249.101

Any help greatly received, cos I'm pulling my hair out! AM I missing something?

Having issues with your BT Broadband?

If you have problems with your BT broadband connection or speed, there are a few checks that we recommend you carry out before calling us. These checks can help you resolve your issue, or at the very least help you eliminate any internal wiring problems that could be impacting your service.

We would also recommend trying a different filter, if you have one connected. We would also advise accessing your test socket, to bypass any internel wiring. That check is outlined here, where there are a few helpful videos that visually explain how to carry out the check.

If you have completed these checks and you are still having issues, please contact us on 0800 800 154 or contact one of our livechat teams here. Smiley Happy

BT Cancellation

Hi there.

I have been a BT business customer for over two years.

THE PROBLEM

I have been having problems with BT over the past year, with slow and dropped connections. It's a BT business account. Although when I speak to business customer services, the service is great, but unfortunately the broadband connection itself has been slow and dropping several times a day, and has been significantly worse over the past few weeks. Fortunately (or what I thought at least), my contract was up this month.

THE NOTICE OF DISCONNECTION

So with that, we decided to end our service and use Virgin, who have just installed fiber optic cables along our road a few months ago.  After calling Virgin we had an installation date for the 18th, so naturally, I gave notice and booked a disconnection on the 19th. The BT customer service agent agreed that the 19th is the best date because it would give me time to delay if there is a problem with the installation of our new service and save paying for two services. I agreed and proceeded to confirm my notice of termination.

THE REQUEST TO CANCEL/ DELAY THE DISCONNECTION

Unfortunately, the virgin installation wasn't as simple as we hoped (being a new building) and it will take 3/4 weeks before they can come back. So naturally, the first thing I did was call BT to cancel the disconnection booked for the following day (tomorrow). I got through to someone at15:03hrs and told them of my intention to cancel the disconnection.

The customer service advisor, who was very polite, told me that unfortunately, the termination of service is imminent and that they are not able to stop the disconnection for tomorrow. However, she would contact the Order Management Department who would attempt to stop the disconnection. I was told to expect a callback. However, if I didn't get a call back by 17:30hrs to call back because the department closes at 18:00hrs. Well, no one called. I couldn't get through to them on time.

NO INTERNET FOR A MONTH

The time is now 21:29 and I have been on the phone to customer services who said that the Order Management Department left at note 'around 3 pm to say that they can't stop the disconnection because 'it's too late.'

I was advised to call in at 9 am and speak to them, despite them leaving a note to say that they are unable to push back the disconnection.

So now... despite doing everything I was told by BT (giving notice, getting a callback, calling back), I am looking at the prospect of being without internet for my business until the end of January.

Why was this so hard to organise? I am completely bewildered, by the service, even right to the very end, as I now expect to be disconnected shortly.

So very disappointed. Is there anything you can do to help? Please.

Cannot Access Business Smart Hub in Bridge Mode

After 9 months of poor wifi coverage I invested in a Linksys Velop WiFi Mesh system. To avoid any issues I turned the Business Smart Hub in to Bridge Mode and used the Velop as the router.

When I try to access the hub it will not connect. I've tied connecting a PC directly to the hub but as there is no DHCP active on the hub it won't allocate an IP address. However, I'd still have expected the Hub to appear on the network.

The Velop Settings are:-

Router IP - 192.168.1.1

Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0

DHCP - 192.1.168.10

IP Address Range - 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.249

ANy suggestions would be appreciated.
